PROFESSOR SENJO SHIMIZU TALKED ABOUT THE NAVIER STOKES EQUATION AT THE MDLS FMIPA ITB
BANDUNG, fmipa.itb.ac.id, –Profesor Senjo Shimizu, Professor of Mathematics at Kyoto University, Japan, last Saturday, December 2, 2023 at 14.00-15.30 WIB gave a guest lecture in the “Mathematics Distinguished Lecture Series (MDLS)” series at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB). The title of the lecture was “Free Boundary Problems for The Navier-Stokes Equation”.
Fluids are governed by the Navier-Stokes equations, which are derived from the laws of conservation of momentum and conservation of mass. The Navier-Stokes equations are nonlinear partial differential equations that include the first-order spatial derivative of the velocity vector, called the advection term. In this presentation, Prof. Senjo Shimizu discussed free boundary problems where fluid boundaries change with time, such as raindrops or ocean waves. In particular, Prof. Senjo Shimizu addressed the problem of free boundaries in infinite domains in globally scale-invariant spaces in time. The proof is based on the regularity of the corresponding Stokes problem in half-space.
Prof. Edy Tri Baskoro, Chair of the 2023 MDLS Committee, said that Prof. Senjo Shimizu is one of the mathematicians who made major contributions to the field of mathematics. He has written about 50 publications in Scopus indexed scientific journals with an H-index of 12. “In 2014, Prof. Senjo Shimizu received the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany. Professor Senjo Shimizu served as President of the Mathematical Society of Japan in the 2021-2022 period, and currently serves as Acting President of the Mathematical Society of Japan,” he added.
This MDLS activity has been organized by the Mathematics Study Program, FMIPA ITB, since 2021 by presenting speakers who are world figures in various fields of mathematics. Throughout 2021, four editions had been held with the following speakers: Prof. Motoko Kotani (Japan), Prof. Christophe Ritzenthaler (France), Prof. Hans Munthe-Kaas (Norway), and Prof. Richard A. Brualdi (United States). Throughout 2022, six editions has been held with the following speakers: Prof. Martin Hairer (England), Prof. Edy Soewono (Indonesia), Prof. Marta Sanz-Sole (Spain), Prof. Gil Kalai (Israel), Prof. Gang Tian (China), and Prof. Efim Zelmanof (United States). This year, Prof. Senjo Shimizu is the fourth speaker at MDLS 2023 with the three previous speakers: Prof. Avi Wigderson (United States), Prof. Kuntjoro Adji Sidarto (Indonesia), and Prof. Kim Beswick (Australia). This fourth edition was attended by around 40 participants (lecturers, researchers, and undergraduate and graduate students) from various universities in Indonesia.
