FMIPA ITB Patriot Team Building Indonesian Pride on the Papua Border

Bagikan:

SENGGI, fmipa.itb.ac.id, - One of the Patriot teams led by FMIPA lecturers, Abdul Rohman Supandi, is currently conducting research and studies in the Senggi Transmigration Area, Senggi District, Keerom Regency, Papua Province. This team consists of several ITB alumni, namely Riri Saputri (Astronomi), Muhammad Rizqi (Fisika), Arini Wendy Astuti (Teknik Sipil), dan Inri Nikita dari Teknik petambangan Universitas Cendrawasih). The Senggi area, which directly borders Papua New Guinea, has a strategic and critical position. On the one hand, Senggi has the potential to become a stronghold and symbol of Indonesian sovereignty; but on the other hand, without proper management, this area could become a vulnerable point for the country's territorial integrity.

One of the strategic steps to accelerate development in this region is through the transmigration program. This program plays a role in increasing the population, accelerating human resource development, as well as spurring the growth of basic facilities such as education, health and new economic centers. The Senggi transmigration area, which was opened in the early 1990s, is part of efforts to equalize development in the Land of Papua. However, along the way, various challenges emerged, ranging from the viability of transmigrants' lives, social impacts, to economic stagnation. Now, some transmigrant communities are switching from the agricultural sector to community mining. This shift does open up new economic opportunities, but it also creates social and environmental problems, such as river pollution due to hazardous waste.
The Patriot Team is here to restore the direction of development of the transmigration area according to its initial goal: to create an independent transmigrant community and play a role in improving human resources, health and the economy of the local community. We encourage transmigrants to share knowledge, skills and experiences with the surrounding community so that mutual progress can be built.
Through discussions with local governments, the team seeks to gather information regarding ongoing programs, community needs and challenges in the field. Meanwhile, with the community, we carry out outreach and Focus Group Discussions (FGD) to foster awareness and an active role in joint development.

As an academic community, we also emphasize the importance of education as the key to improving the quality of life, as well as awareness of maintaining health amidst limited facilities. In the economic sector, we introduce the potential of agriculture and livestock as an economic chain that can be developed, including its use to produce biofuel and biogas in accordance with one of the fields pursued by the team leader, namely Abdul Rohman Supandi. This renewable energy can be a solution to the limited electricity supply and the absence of subsidized gas in the region.

From the community mining side, we provide education about the environmental impact of uncontrolled mining practices and the importance of safe waste management.
We will compile all the findings and results of this study in the form of policy recommendations for central and regional governments. The aim is clear: to support the development of border areas that are sustainable, inclusive and prosperous for the Papuan people.
