WEBINAR SERIES OF THE 2023 COMBINATORICS TODAY: PROF. SANMING ZHOU FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA

Bagikan:

BANDUNG, fmipa.itb.ac.id, -Combinatorial Mathematics Research Group, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Institut Teknologi Bandung, in collaboration with Pusat Kolaborasi Riset Teori Graf dan Kombinatorika Indonesia (Center for Indonesian Graph Theory and Combinatorics Research Collaboration) holds again webinar series of the 2023 Combinatorics Today Series or 2023 CTS. This year is the third year that this research group has held CTS. Throughout 2023, this online activity provides 11 editions and presents leading speakers in the field of graph theory and combinatorics from various countries including Australia, Czech Republic, Italy, Philippines, Austria, Slovenia, Canada, and of course Indonesia.

In the opening edition, Friday, February 17, 2023, at 2 pm to 3.30 pm, Prof. Sanming Zhou from the University of Melbourne, Australia, gave a lecture on Nowhere-Zero 3-Flows in Vertex Transitive Graphs. If G=(V,E) is a graph with the edges given an orientation, nowhere-zero k-flow on a graph G is a labeling with a non-zero integer with an absolute value less than k on each directed arc of G. Hence, at every point on the graph G, the sum of the labels of the inward edges (mod k) are equal to the sum of the labels of the outgoing edges (mod k). The famous conjecture proposed by Tutte says that every 4-edge connected graph has non-zero 3-flow. In his presentation, Prof. Zhou presented a survey of recent developments regarding this conjecture and provided some new results on non-zero 3-flow for the class of vertex transitive graphs.

Dr. Rinovia Simanjuntak, as a moderator for this session, said that Prof. Zhou is one of the leading figures in combinatorics. “He has made significant contributions in the fields of graph theory, algebraic graph theory, and network optimization. He has written more than 100 articles which have been cited more than 1000 times. For his contributions, he was awarded the Kirkman Medal of the Institute of Combinatorics and Its Applications (2003) and Future Fellowship by the Australian Research Council (2012-2015),” she said. “Besides actively writing, his dedication to developing the field of combinatorics was demonstrated when he was an Editor-in-Chief of the Australasian Journal of Combinatorics (2018-2022) and Vice President (2014-2016) and President (2017) of the Combinatorial Mathematics Society of Australia,” she added.

This first edition of this webinar was opened directly by Prof. Edy Tri Baskoro as Chair of the 2023 CTS Committee. In his speech, Prof. Edy, who is also Head of Combinatorial Mathematics Research Group, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Institut Teknologi Bandung, said that holding this CTS was a commitment from Combinatorial Mathematics Research Group, FMIPA ITB, to continue to exist in the context of scientific development of graph theory and combinatorics, and to continue trying to expand research collaboration with various world centers of excellence. This webinar was attended by around 50 participants consisting of lecturers, researchers, and undergraduate and graduate students.
