BANDUNG, fmipa.itb.ac.id — On Friday 26 September 2025, the Bosscha Observatory held a science dissemination activity with children from Kinderdorf Children's Village and RW 10, the village around the Bosscha complex. Carrying a theme “Earth as a Planet”, this activity took place on Friday 26 September 2025 and was attended by dozens of children aged kindergarten to grade 6 elementary school.

According to the Head of the Bosscha Observatory, Dr. rer. Nat. Hesti Retno Tri Wulandari, S.Si., M.Sc., this activity is part of the science dissemination program funded by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Technology. Of around 500 proposals submitted, only 14 were selected, including the program from the Bosscha Observatory.

"Today we invited children from RW 10 and Kinderdorf. For the material, we divided them into two classes. The small class from kindergarten to grade 2 learned about the earth itself - land, continents, and animals. Meanwhile, the large class, from grades 3 to 6, were introduced to the position of the earth in the solar system and the universe," explained Dr. Hesti.

The main aim of this activity is to increase scientific literacy from an early age, with a fun approach. Children are taught while telling stories and doing activities hands-on agar sains terasa dekat dengan kehidupan sehari-hari.

"We want children to know that science is not something scary, but can be learned in a fun way. If later they are interested in going to school or college in the scientific field, that's good, but even if not, they still have good scientific literacy. For example, they have the awareness to look after the earth more wisely," he added.

The atmosphere of the activity was warm. In the small class, the children seemed enthusiastic about following the story and singing while pointing at pictures of continents and animals. Meanwhile in the large class, students were seen listening to an explanation about the position of the earth in the solar system, before finally being given an assignment hand-on.

After Kinderdorf, similar activities will be held at the Lembang Village Library at the end of November. Apart from that, Bosscha is also preparing for a big event in the form of an Open House in early November, as well as participating in the Astara Ganesha Science Exhibition.

Even though it is supported by special funding, this activity is nothing new for Bosscha. The Observatory regularly carries out visits and programs public outreach ke masyarakat. [VS]
