MathERA: Real Steps for FMIPA ITB to Improve the Quality of Mathematics Education
BANDUNG, fmipa.itb.ac.id, -A total of 3,040 students from 160 high schools in 27 districts/cities throughout West Java took part in the 2025 Mathematics Competency Mapping organized by the FMIPA ITB Mathematics Team together with the West Java Provincial Education Office on Bandung, 25 October 2025.
This activity is a strategic effort to strengthen literacy and equalize the quality of mathematics learning at the high school level.
Data-Based Digital Assessment
The test will be held online on 21–22 October 2025 via the MathERA platform (Mathematics Excellence Recognition Award), a digital assessment system developed by the FMIPA ITB Mathematics Team.
A total of 30 multiple choice questions and short answers measure five pillars of competency: conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, reasoning, problem solving, and mathematical communication. Material includes numbers and sequences, algebra, geometry, statistics and probability, advanced mathematics and trigonometry with emphasis on Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS).
"The data from this assessment will be the basis for policies to improve the quality of learning in the future," he said Dr. Purwanto, Head of the West Java Province Education Service.
Innovative, Inclusive and Efficient
MathERA is designed to be stable even in areas with limited networks. The participation rate reached more than 95%, reflecting the high enthusiasm of students and teachers.
"Students not only count, but also learn to think logically and analytically," said Prof. Edy Tri Baskoro, Ph.D., Chair of the Implementation Team and Professor of Mathematics at ITB.
Synergy and National Impact
This program involves collaboration between FMIPA ITB, West Java Education Department, Regional Education Office Branches I–XIII, as well as support from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and LPDP through Community Development – Equity 2025.
Apart from supporting SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 10 (Reducing Gaps), and SDG 17 (Partnership), this activity is expected to become a national model for research-based digital assessment that is inclusive and fair.
