ITB Physics Researchers Participate in International Ocean Research in Sumba Waters

Bagikan:

BANDUNG, fmipa.itb.ac.id —Two researchers from Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) participated in an ocean research expedition conducted with a joint Indonesian-Chinese team. The activity took place aboard a Chinese research vessel and focused on studying marine biodiversity and geology in the waters south of Sumba Island.

One of the ITB researchers involved is Dr. Alvina Kusumadewi Kuncoro, lecturer from Earth Physics and Complex Systems Research Group (KK FBSK), Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) ITBDr. Alvina contributed to a two-dimensional numerical geodynamics study, validated using GNSS data, seismic profiles from the Ocean Bottom Seismometer (OBS), and local earthquake distribution. This study aims to understand the tectonic dynamics and seismic potential in the survey area.

Apart from Dr. Alvina, other ITB researchers who participated were Gabriella Alodia, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D. from Hydrography Expertise Group, Faculty of Earth Sciences and Technology (FITB) ITB. The two joined nine other researchers from BRIN, UGM, UI, and Xiamen University (China).

The involvement of ITB researchers in this expedition reflects the institution's commitment to supporting cross-border collaborative research and strengthening Indonesia's academic contributions to marine and earth sciences.
