Indonesia–UK Initiative for Vector-Borne Disease Modelling Workshop

The Indonesia–UK Vector-Borne Disease Modelling Workshop is an international research event that brings together scientists from Indonesia, the United Kingdom, and other countries to advance mathematical and computational approaches for understanding vector-borne diseases such as dengue and chikungunya.

Vector-borne diseases account for more than 17% of all infectious diseases globally, causing more than 700,000 deaths each year. Many of these diseases are transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, which are highly prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions. In recent decades, the spread of vector-borne diseases has increased due to factors such as urbanisation, increased global travel, and climate change, highlighting the need for improved monitoring, modelling, and outbreak prediction.

This workshop aims to strengthen collaboration between Indonesian and UK researchers, as well as vector-borne disease modelling experts from around the world,  by developing a joint research network for vector-borne disease modelling. Indonesia provides valuable experience in managing outbreaks in tropical environments, while the UK contributes strong expertise in mathematical epidemiology and infectious disease modelling. Through this collaboration, researchers will exchange knowledge, develop new modelling approaches, and explore innovative strategies for predicting and controlling disease outbreaks.

Key research themes of the workshop include:

  • Identifying patterns of virus transmission in different regions of Indonesia
  • Investigating the impact of different viral strains on outbreak dynamics
  • Modelling interactions between environmental factors and mosquito population dynamics
  • Developing early warning systems for forecasting vector-borne disease outbreaks

The workshop also focuses on capacity building and training opportunities for early-career researchers and students, enabling them to learn advanced modelling techniques and collaborate with leading experts in epidemiology, mathematics, and public health.

The event is hosted at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) as part of the Indonesia–UK Vector-Borne Disease Modelling Network, a collaborative initiative between ITB and the University of Oxford.

This initiative is financially supported by The Academy of Medical Sciences through the Networking Grants Programme, which aims to strengthen international research partnerships and foster collaboration between researchers in the UK and partner countries.

Workshop Day

This activity is a two-day in-person scientific workshop hosted at Institut Teknologi Bandung. The workshop will gather leading researchers, public health experts, and early-career scientists from Indonesia and the United Kingdom to collaborate on mathematical and computational approaches for understanding vector-borne disease transmission.

The event will feature research talks and discussions focusing on modelling techniques used to study climate-sensitive vector-borne diseases. Participants will explore how environmental factors, climate variability, and viral strains influence disease dynamics and outbreak patterns.

The workshop will also include collaborative discussion sessions aimed at identifying future research directions and strengthening institutional partnerships.

Virtual Seminar Series

This activity is a complementary activity to the Workshop Day. This virtual academic forum is designed to facilitate regular knowledge exchange between researchers in Indonesia, the United Kingdom, and countries around the world. The seminar series will bring together experts in mathematical epidemiology, public health, climate science, and computational modelling to discuss recent advances in the modelling of vector-borne diseases.

Through monthly online sessions, invited speakers and participating researchers will present their latest work on topics such as dengue transmission dynamics, mosquito population modelling, climate-driven outbreak risks, and early warning systems for disease surveillance.

The seminar series aims to strengthen international collaboration, encourage interdisciplinary dialogue, and build a sustainable research network focused on improving the understanding and prediction of vector-borne disease outbreaks.
